If you are under 18 there are child labor laws to protect you.

If you are in a company that states the amount of time in the employee handbook or are an employee with an employment contract, it will spell out your break times.

What most people don't realize is that there are no protections for any other workers on guaranteed break times. I work in a company where I may be working for 12 hours and they do not give lunch breaks. We are expected to find times to eat when we can get a few minutes. The law does NOT guarantee break times. However, so many people believe this, that people start to think this is a legal requirement.

I've worked in Human Resources and attended labor and employment law seminars and courses and this is a subject that came up.

From managing retail store, the guidelines, according to the federal standard was that if you were scheduled for 6 hours or more, then you were to take a 30 minute unpaid break. If you were scheduled for just 6 hours or less, then you weren't entitled to one. As far as a "break", the typical '15' minute break we think of, is really not something that is promised by the law, but something that employers often do to conform with society's expectations. The only break they are suppose to give you, is if you work over 6 hours and then it's just one break, for 30 minutes.

Keep in mind, some local laws may have more coverage for workers and would be in effect in some areas and not in other part of the country.

You can work as long as you want without taking a break...however you'll just burn yourself out and make yourself very ill.

That's why there are rules and regulations that protect employees from abusive employers that overwork their staff..usually a 15 minute break is required after every 2 to 2-1/2 hours of continous work.

To find out for sure why don't you call your state's Labor Dept. I worked for fed govt; could work 4 hrs w/o bread or 6 hrs w/o lunch.

5 hours without one but it depends on where you are here in Canada it really depends on what kind of job your doing if your a cashier in a grocery store then you usually get a break if your working in a fast paced restaurant then often theres no time it depends on the employer usually tho if theres no time for coffee breaks (they dont need to give you those) they do give a lunch break
