im doing a science project and i need to make an electromagnet with only a d cell battery for the power sorce and it must work like a fishing pol that meens the magnet needs to be hung from a rod over 30 inches long and i also need to put a switch on it so i can turn it on and off easly pleas help o and pictures help but id perfer some one to explane how to make one or give me a real good enternet sit or something

It really depends on the number of windings you do. So use a soft iron core, and wrap a ton of wire around it. Then connect it to the rod and put a switch there with the battery.
The more coils, the stronger it will be.

Robert is correct. With just a D battery you will need a "ton" of wire to get a working magnet.
