this is common in newly introduced fish. Long bodied fish such as sharks, danios, and large barbs need a lot of space. They often are seen in cramped tanks (petsmart's tanks are smaller) doing this because instict tells them they have to swim. Once they are accostomed to the new tank, this behavior will subside. If it's a brand new tank, monitor your water quality. Make sure there are hiding places for your fish. Salt in the water helps with stress issues. Disolve a tablesoon of water per five gallons and add it to the tank. Stress coat may also help calm them down. Make sure there are a lot of tall plants and only leave the light on for about 8-12 hours a day. Fish become neorotic and stressed of they do not have a day/night cycle to rest.
Monitor behavior and watch for other signs of illness as thy will most likely present in the first two weeks in a new tank. Daily observation will help you catch external disease and infestation quickly.
Good Luck!

I think 30+ fish is way too many for a 55 gallon tank unless they are neon tetras. The rule of thumb is 1-1" inch fish per gallon. A 1" fish is very small. I'm thinking you have too many fish and they are stressed about what's going on in the tank.

The fish are crammed they need more space. Pretty soon they will start killing each other even if they are not aggresive fish. Fish do that sometimes for fun or to look for a way out. They are also letting other fishes know that this is their territory
