The girl who answered above me is wrong. Trying to distract yourself by thinking of sunsets or nature or whatever will not work. It will only temporarily push the memories aside and that will make them fester and then re-emerge stronger than before. This is because memories are ingrained into your brain cells, and only time can mke them subside a bit. Unpleasant memories demand attention and processing! The best way to deal with them is to acknowledge them, try to put them in persepctive, and then move on with your everyday life. Repressed memories are often the cause of serious mental illness. Most violent criminal offenders had traumatic childhoods and then attempted to repress those memories, until they later reared up in greater fury and caused more trouble. Turn the tables on the memories and instead of letting them control you, control them by acknowledging them and then belittling them. This will take time but it will erode them, like water or wind does over rocks.

Sometimes it's not very easy to forget. It depends on what has happened to you in the last 24 hours. If it is something bad, then I would get a friend with me to discuss it. If they're not available, then seek professional help...someone who will listen and is capable of giving good advise. Possibly a minister or priest would be good (if you know one)
Use self distractions. Put on some music you like and just sink into a translike state looking at the beauty of a sunrise, the rush of the ocean against your feet, or the simple sound of the tide at ebb. See a light house atop a ridge at the waters edge with the sun sinking into twilight and listen to the sounds of the last seagull of the day flying past. Does that help a little?

If it has really affected you you wont be able to take it out of your mind for at least 3 days. But eventually you will forget it and get on with life. Thats how human mind is. It can neither be happy nor be sad for long. Cheer up!
