Many people will vote for their party regardless of the issues. If a person is a registered Democrat, they will vote Democrat, and if a person is a Republican they will vote Republican.
Here's a story: a guy told my friend that he doesn't even look at the names on the ballot. He just votes "Democrat." My friend responded: "Then you would vote for someone like Hitler." The guy said "No I wouldn't." My friend said: "Well, you said you don't even pay attention to the people your voting for, so yes you would vote for Hitler!"

because they know that putting one more seat in the house or the senate into the hands of the party that generally most favors their views will give that party more power, broadly, to accomplish party goals. most elected officials vote with their party most of the time. so a person's party is a good indication of how they will vote in office.
also, there are people on both sides of the aisle who have lost faith in the party on the other side. I, personally, believe that you must have some serious moral or intellectual failing to willingly ally yourself with the party of George W. Bush, the party that continues to endorse his misguided policies and catastrophic decisions. When you go out there and say 'hey, i'm a republican,' I want to know why on earth you would do such a thing, and i have serious doubts about you as a person. But there are people who feel the same way about anyone that would belong to the party of Bill Clinton. I don't understand it, but there are.

Good question. the people who think the democrats are any less crooked, corrupt or beholden to corporations and special intrests are fools. Mostly it was disatisfaction tied in with a healthy dose of propaganda (a half truth is as good as a lie) by the mainstream media that caused the election upset, which was still far less a "landslide" then what democrats and CNN predicted (which is why Pelosi is holding up a rep's election in FL because he only one at last count by 300 or so votes, so they are recounting naturally), although the reps were hurt (and the media refuses to admit this) because of their failure to enforce existing law on illegal immigration and employment. THEY ARE ALL CROOKS once they have been in office any length of time, they make deals to get in there, and the return is the "seniority" which allows them chairman seats on committees that thereby get the biggest portion of "member budget items" or PORK for their districts, thsi is how our tax dollars go into vital neccessities like $37 million dollar opera houses in upstate NY because one little town has to compete with it's neighbor, and didn't have one yet. (That was Sen. Clinton, "Let them have opera!")
PS I don't know anyone who loses sleep over abortion or gay marriage, and if that determines who you vote for, well, let's just say you are on the "fringe".

There is no question in my mind that “we” Americans are the most brainwashed society on earth. Consequently, unawareness, ignorance, apathy as well as senselessness are the main characteristics factored in the American political process, which allows the few to govern, to control and to manipulate the many.
As I see it, the relentless public conditioning that takes place, from birth to death and on a 24/7/365.25 basis, results to a unison softening of the brain which leads the voter to be a supporter of either political party rather than being a true American patriot.
For that of course, we only have to thank our selves for allowing the capitalistic corporate America, both lobby-controlled political parties and the various special interest groups to influence our thoughtless actions.
So in a few words, God bless the TV propaganda and those who benefit from it!

Because Democrats are liberals and Republicans are conservatives. So people actually vote liberal or conservative, not Democrat or Republican.

Because you can vote for the person but then the person is the thrall of their party; so , you might as well vote the party.

Some do some don't
People are creatures of habit, and focused thought has to be willfully maintained.
I studied Political Science (B.A.) at the college level and I am even left cynical about the whole matter.
