Look at the memory itself and find out a few crucial things.

1. The Speed of the Ram, is it PC 2100, 2500, 2700,3200, etc. Or it might say the MHz of the Ram, 2100= 266MHz, 2700=333, etc.

2. Find out how much each ram chip is for, 256, 512, 1024 etc.

3. Find out from your BIOS how much ram it can take at max, this might be in your user manual, if not google search it or go to the manufactures website, Dell, Gateway, Etc.

You should be set with these three guidelines, this is a fast and easy upgrade especially once you have done it a couple times!

Did you pull out the existing module? The other slot may be hidden from view, but once you remove the installed madule you should be able to see it.
