You can download free programs that optimize your dial up connection, such as TCP Optimizer. The set up in Windows is defaulted for a high speed connection, not dial up. The program will adjust the settings to match your connection speed. If you are having problems with downloads, there are free download managers that will establish several simultaneous connections, speeding up downloads. Additionally if you get bumped off, the program stores the chunks it already received, so when you get back on line you only have to download the remaining pieces. An internet connection can become slow or stop working due to a number of reasons depending on the type of the connection. Many of the problems can be solved by making software changes or small hardware corrections. Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yl62gz

When I had dial-up it would go slow some days. This is when I would go into settings and modify the locations....sometimes it could be that the number it is dialing into just happens to be slow today - you should have the option to uncheck that number and have it dial a different number to connect.

try defraging your computer. go to start, then all programs, accessories, then system tools, then disk defragmenter, and finally defragment. If you haven't done this, it may take a while, so be patient and good luck. It worked for me.
