I would like to add to the ones that have already been mentioned, the Gotham by Gaslight book, where Bruce Wayne’s parents lived in an earlier century. His father was an American Civil War medic, and they were killed by a highwayman. Bruce became Batman and wound up hunting down his parents' killer—who turned out to be Jack the Ripper! It was SUCH a great story. It shows that there will be, there must be, there always will be—the Batman!

Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth also known as "Batman: Arkham Asylum"
written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Dave Mckean. This is a true "Graphic Novel" not just a collection of comics. The story is 100% self contained in the book and is probably the best written psychological explorations of Batman by two comic geniuses.

Having in no way examine a photo Novel i might want to stay faraway from any thoughts that contain previous understanding of a personality. This contains Hush, The darkish knight Returns, The Killing shaggy dog tale, and lack of life contained in the relatives. the tale i might want to signify is Batman: The lengthy Halloween. it truly is a stand on my own tale and introduces you to Batman in an basic to stick with format.

The Dark Knight Returns. Frank Miller.

It shows him as he shold be all on his own...ok there is a Robin, but still. He is old, he is human. It shows a bit of the insanity that makes him him.
