Because throughout the history of time, becoming legally married is a pretty recent thing. Before it was a religious ceremony (every religion has their own), now that isn't even required. If I live with someone and have a family with that person, and fill the role of a wife, I can consider myself a wife. If I don't pay a couple hundred dollars for a legal document, that is a technicality.

I don't know. The whole upside to being married is to use the terms: husband, wife, spouse. Otherwise: girlfriend, boyfriend, live-in, f-buddy, or fiance are used.
