OK..my son is 12 and I took him to his yearly check-up today, let me start by saying NORMALLY I love my kids doctor and the reason I love him is because he's old fashioned (not as far as treatments go, but with his "bedside manner), he's down to earth, straight forward, holds nothing back, BUT today I do believe he crossed the line. Like I said, my son is 12, he HATES shot's (who doesn't), he wasn't expecting one because I didn't know he was getting one, or I would have prepared him, so, when the doc. pulls out the needle my son gets teary eyed, he tells him to grow up, sticks him with the needle, my son pulls away, needle comes out, doc says "good, now you get stuck again" When its all said and done, my child is still crying, the doctor tells me, IN FRONT OF HIM, "better go buy him a dress mom, he's acting like a girl" and walks out! I was dumbfounded! I comforted my son, and walked out feeling like i was hit by a truck! What would you do? Help please.

As a parent you have an obligation to protect your son..I would file a complaint with his office and then find yourself a different doctor..a lot of grown up are afraid of needles as well..its not just a 12 year old thing or a girl thing its a personality thing and if your doctor can't see that then he needs to grow up and get a new profession...just my oppoion...oh and by the way..your son...let him know that just because you are a doctor does not mean your always right about everything! Sorry to hear about your son's experience

That is a tough one. I do agree that he may have been out of line, but I've got to agree with another poster that he may have been trying to do a good thing; he just used bad judgement in the way he did it. Amongst each other guys use phrases like, "Quit being a puss!" "Want me to get you a tissure Sally?" And "What are you a girl?" At some points it almost gets mean but its what we do. So, as I said a little bit of both? Sorry, about that though, I still tear up when I think of the shots needle at bootcamp.....God that hurt.

My parents had a doctor who was bad, he starts this by telling my parents that they could call his work number anytime they have a problem with my bro, or have any questions. My bro gets a rash, they call the doc, he starts yelling at them becdause they called him during a football game, he starts insultin them and everything, just completely unprofesional, like your sons doctor. Change doctors, because this guy is a jerk, i'm afraid of needles but if the doctor said something of the same nature to me, i would slap him silly.

I too have a 12 yr old, and older kids too. From what you are saying your doc is like mine, and maybe the doc was trying to give you both advice in what you think was rude. For one maybe you are over mothering your son and making a sissy out of him, and secondly your doc was pushing your son into thinking in a more manly way. I think your doc is straight up, I wish more were like him, I know how you feel, and I understand, but in this world today it is not like it use to be. Our media is pushing the queer thing over board, and what your doc did was a good thing, believe it or not. In other words he was just saying to your son what any man would say to their son in that situation, it is just male language. LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTOR HE CARES ABOUT YOU AND THE WELFARE OF YOUR SON!

You need to communicate with the doctor and tell him he crossed the line. A fear of needles in normal. hey i know a person who fainted at the sight of a needle. I think you should get a new doctor who specializes with kids and is patient.

Its time to look into a new doctor in your area. Screw reasoning with him He has so many patients its not going to leave any effect. All doctors are different. If you dont like the doctor you go to a different one plain and simple theres no other logical option.

I would explain to that doctor that he was out of line. You have to have a doctor that you are comfortable with and this may have broken the doctor patient bond that you and your child once had.I think this may be time to be looking for another familly doctor.Good luck to you.
