I use the Chicco key fit which they are now saying only use with a seatbelt, not the base. Luckily my daughter will have a new car seat by tomorrow since she has outgrown hers anyway. I can't find any safety ratings about the Eddie Bauer Montecito or any stage two car seats or convertible seats. Anyone know of any good websites outside of national safety and traffic admin.

The tests that were done were using both the latch system and the seatbelt. Some of the carseats didn't stay attached to the bases, so it doesn't matter how the base is attached. The gov't only tests front crash not sides, so the study probably has some validity to it. Basically the argument is that Europe's standards are higher and the US does not set a high enough standard for safety. (35 miles an hour is nothing. If most car seats don't pass that then there truly is a problem here.

We have a Britax Marathon for our toddler car seat. My son is tall and he has been in it since he was 6 months old and out grew the Graco Snugride. I can not say enough good things about the Marathon and Britax is always highly rated when it comes to safety. Yes, it is true that it is an expensive seat, but I believe that you get what you pay for. I can cut costs on clothes and toys, but when it comes to safety you need to find those extra dollars. The nice thing is that this seat goes up to 65 pounds so it is going to last us a long time. Good luck!

The tests that were done were to car seats using the car's latch system and not the regular seat belt. If you are concerned just use the seat belt and not the latch system. So many people are going to read this wrong and then take their kids out of car seats all together. That is not what should be done. This only really effects people with new cars that are using the latch system and not your regular seat belt.

I love how one incomplete report in the media sends everyone out to stock up for the next Apocalypse.

This is one report done by one research company. Their study could be flawed. They could have not had the car seats properly installed in the first place. Did they use brand new car seats? Who funded the study? How many times was it replicated? What cars did they use? How did they crash them? I want to read the whole report before I buy a new car seat. And I want to read reports from other independent consumer groups. And from the manufacturers. I refuse to panic over one report I haven't been able to thoroughly study yet.

In the mean time, I'll drive extra carefully just to be on the safe side.

They play on your fear. How severe the crash is,if there ever is one, will ultimately determine the out come, it's good you want the best one, but really how many crashes have you heard of where everyone died but the one baby who was in the "ultimate" car seat, too bad he's now parentless. If you are due for a new one, great, but don't run out and buy another one only because you don't have the one the media reported as the "best one".

Yes, I did hear about this! Craziness!
We just bought the next size of seat for our little guy who's turning 1 soon. It's a Graco. Before this report came out, I heard that the Graco snugride was the safest bet, but that's really all I know about it.
I hope they follow this story and let all of us know what to do next!

It is good to check ratings, but many infant car seats fail because they are not installed properly. Contact the local highway patrol or fire department to see if they will check your car seat for you. We tried to install the car seat ourselves, but then took it to the CHP to have it checked and we found out that we had installed in improperly! They showed us how to install it correctly so that it would be safest for our newborn.

Graco got a good rating. Evenflo got the worst rating so stay away from their's. I was given a Evenflo highchair for my son and it is a piece of garbage.

Isn't it funny though how the only 2 that passed happen to be the 2 most expensive on the market. Maybe you should checl out who funded that study? You'll be surprised at the relation!
