The British adopted principles developed and invented by John Locke to legitimize their government. His idea is that a government is only legitimate if it is established by consent of the governed.

Prior to that, rule by force, heredity or "divine" appointment was all that was necessary.

Most European powers did not deal with a Magna Carta or John Locke. To them, a dictator, like Saddam for example, had legitimate sovereignty, because he had forcefully attained power (and because he paid them nice bribes --- just business to them--- but distasteful to the Anglican culture.)

Without the British successes, the concepts of Rule of Law, and Consent of the Governed, would not exist. Just like they don't exist in Haiti or the Ivory Coast. It would be a different world.

The advances made in the western world would be not near as great (Mexico was colonized by Spain, the US by Britain) nuf said. Where had you rather live? Even Mexicans want to live in the US. The Middle East and Asian countries that were colonized or had British influence are much more advanced than others in those regions. God Bless the Brits.

Well let us ponder? Portuguese tried it? Spanish tried it?France tried it? And they failed to build a promising society anywhere but their own countries really, maybe they were a little to presumptuous about their abilities? Do you think? Italy did well with the Roman empire first of all. And Great Britain really adopted most of their civilization from that very formula(Roman but altered to their own additions). But I think we would be still living in poor hygenic conditions, ignorant , and in some cases still cannibalism, certainly there would be no Christianity. Be the alternative countries I'd have to say we are way better off. Can you imagine being the Spanish Inquisitors and the Crown of Spain being the victor? Good Grief! Or how about the Ghenghis Kahn types, or the barbarians in general. I think we got off easy with the british they had a formula for religion, honor, and a gentlemanly fashion to their world.

Some other European Country would have...Hey, wait, that happened. The Spanish, Dutch, French, Belgians, Porteugese etc all colonised around the world...
So, in other words, like I said......except most western countries wouldn't be speaking English....and History'd be a tad different, I'm sure.

The French would have done it, and you would be writing your question in French. The reason the French hate the USA so much is that the modern world civilisation primarily speaks English, when for a long period in its development it looked as if it would be speaking French.

Another world power, such as Spain, would have been more successful in their attempts at colonizing the world.

Somebody would have. Humans get bored, they have a need to expand and explore. We have finished the exploring part...Now we are just expanding.
