I can only speak for Australia & maybe New Zealand.
When you turn 18 and become and adult you go onto the national and state electoral rolls. At the polls you sign that you've voted.Your name is then checked of agains tthe "Rolls". If you fail to vote you will be fined, unless you have a good reason for not doing so ( such as unexpected illness or travel overseas).
The rational is so that a true picture of the nations political opinion is achieved.
It is FAIR.
No political party can "buy" certain votes or disenfranchise people they don't like. Its about equality of everyone nomatter what station in life they hold.As a result we KNOW that the government we get Is what the MAJORITY of then entire population wants! Here there is a turnout of about 98% of the entire country's adult population.
Frankly we're aghast when we hear of the pitiful turnouts at US and other country's elections. Where minorities select the new leaders!
THAT 'S GROSSLY UNFAIR!!

They are just trying to convince the population that their vote counts - when they really throw away all the votes and count what they want the results to be.

What countries are you referring to, could you name them. I have never heard of a democracy compelling their citizens to vote, that would defeat the purpose of being free.
