I was wondering if anybody knew how much it costs to asphalt a driveway, road? Or how it is calculated? Any information would help. My boyfriends mother, I think, just got scammed. These workers showed up and said they had left over ashpalt from a road they were paving down the street and asked if she wanted her driveway paved. They said they weren't sure how much they had left and if it would cover her driveway, and it would probably cost $600 but wouldn't go much over $1000. But, then they did a whole lot more and her bill was $4500 for a pretty small amount of paving that was done.

Your mother has been scammed. You need to call your local police as soon as possible, expecially if she has not yet paid them. This scam has been going on for years. Groups of "pavers" travel the country preying on the gullible and most often the elderly ... especially older women living alone. I'll bet there was no written agreement. I'll bet that they wanted cash. I'll bet that they used intimidation to make her pay. I'll bet there is no working phone number to get ahold of the "paving company". The list goes on and on.

Chances are good that your mother wasn't the only victim in your area. Chances are also good that the crooks will leave town quickly because their presence will quickly be known to the police. Even in a big city, they can usually only do a few "jobs" before the police ask the local newspapers and newscasts to broadcast warnings about the scam. Consumers rarely get their money back in these situations because it becomes expensive to pursue in civil court and very hard to prosecute in criminal court.

Lessen to be learned: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Good luck with your problem.

$4500 sounds like a lot of money. Please measure the driveway and call a few local asphalt contractors for over the phone rough estimates. Good luck.
