It sounds like the states gives you ultrasounds by like 8 weeks pregnant? I am from Canada and normally have to beg for them because I've had a baby pass away inutero. I'm just curious if it is the way it is done out there. I think it is great if so.

I'm in Manitoba, Canada and here they have to book you for an ultrasound and it usually takes 2 months unless it is an emergency. The doctors here don't have ultrasound machines in their offices. And some people here never even get an ultrasound.

If you have insurance here in the US: yes.

If you do not have insurance in the US; then you and your child will rot before anyone does anything for you.

Canada has such a better medical system.

Ah, it depends on the province and the circumstances. I'm Canadian also, I currently live in Quebec, I was scheduled for an "early" ultrasound but I wasn't patient enough to wait for the hospital (3 week wait) so I paid for it and had it done in a week and a half ($60). My best friend has three children, two born in Newfoundland and one in Nova Scotia. In both she was scheduled for ultrasounds early on as normal procedure. She was seen between 8 and 11 weeks each time.

From what I understand, in Ontario you could be waiting a while.

If you want to go right away, I'd say get the referrel and just paid it yourself, you can go right away and a doctor will do it so they can actually tell you everything on the spot.

It's not that common...it really depends on your doctor/insurance. Some doctors will use ultrsound to verify a pregnancy right away...sometimes you can't even get an appt to see a doctor to confirm pregnancy until you are almost 12 weeks. I got one ultrasound at...17 weeks? And then one more at like 22 to determine the sex. Oh, and they couldn't get a godo shot of the face cause she was covering it with her hands so I got one more quicky one at like 24 weeks just to get a pic of her face (to check for a cleft palate)...Other than those main two I think it is just a case-by-case basis. When I got pregnant last year (had a VERY early miscarriage) I got an ultrasound done at like 3 weeks just so the doctor could verify the pregnancy...and than another one like 2 weeks later when I started bleeding to verify the miscarriage...

In the states doctors will give you an ultrasound whenever you want. Because we pay for our own medical care/insurance. Canada has those guidelines to keep costs down.

They usually only do a 8 week ultrasound if something is wrong. You get your first one around 14 or 15 weeks.
