I'm sure this was prescribed to you for a certain reason. I was on Depo for six years and gained 40 pounds, which I attribute soley to this drug. I was not using it for birth control, but for ovarian cysts. And it did shrink the them, but I stopped taking it this past November and have lost 15 of the 40 so far.
SO... I would not recommend this as birth control. As someone else mentioned, there are some horrific side effects - expect to gain about 10 pounds per year that you continue to take this. Sure, it's great not having a period, but I'd rather be 40 pounds lighter!
As far as your questions is concerned, here's some text from the below website: "A typical depo provera schedule consists of one dose four times a year. Your doctor will first make all the necessary physical examinations and then give you the first intramuscular injection during the first seven days of your period. One dose of this contraceptive injection will be enough to prevent pregnancy for approximately 12 weeks."

Yes within the first 3 days I believe. I have been on it for many years. Please make sure you are up to date on the irreversible bone loss and other side effects common with Depo. It is not for everyone.

Nope! I had my first shot while not on my period.

I'd strongly recommend not getting the shot anymore, I was on it for four years and found out that after five years you need a bone density check as it seriously messes with your bone health.
