General Hospital is the longest-running daytime American soap opera on the American Broadcasting Company television network, and is also the longest-running soap opera produced in Hollywood (having been taped at the Prospect Avenue ABC Television Center West and Sunset-Gower Studios).
Set in the fictional city of Port Charles, New York, General Hospital debuted on April 1, 1963, the same day that rival network NBC launched its own medical soap opera, The Doctors. The show originally aired for a half-hour until the network expanded it to the unusual length of 45 minutes in 1976, and then to a full hour in 1978. The serial was created by soap writers Frank and Doris Hursley, a husband-and-wife team.
General Hospital is credited for starting several trends in the soap opera genre in the 1980s, most notably that of the supercouple and fast-paced action-adventure plotlines that were remarkably different from the more traditional domestic and social issues that had been the sole focus of most soap operas during the previous decades. In 2003, when GH celebrated its 40th anniversary, TV Guide named it "The Greatest Soap Opera Of All Time."
Guiding Light (known as The Guiding Light prior to 1975) is an American television program credited by the Guinness Book of World Records as being the longest-running soap opera in production and the longest running drama in television history. The 15,000th televised episode of Guiding Light aired on September 7, 2006. Due to this series run, it is not only considered to be the longest soap opera, but the longest series of any show created.
The program was created by soap writer Irna Phillips, and began as an NBC radio serial on January 25, 1937 before moving to CBS on June 30, 1952, as a televised serial.
All My Children is an American soap opera that has been broadcast Monday through Friday on the ABC TV network since January 5, 1970. Originally a half-hour in length, the show moved to an hour in 1977. It is videotaped at ABC's television studio on West 66th Street in New York City. As of July 31, 2006, the show has a filmed (as opposed to taped) appearance.

Not sure about Guiding Light, but General Hospital has been around since I was about 3 or 4 at least if not longer, and that was about 33 to 34 years ago. Remember watching it with my grandmother before nap time when I was only about 4 & 5.

Guiding Light, the early '50's, but was on radio before that, so probably form the 40's.
All my Children, 1970.

iI believe they began in the 1950's . All My Children started a few years later. I think the 1970's I am sure about General Hospital that is the only soap I watched when I was pregnant for my son. didn't watch it after I had my son. Started to watch Passions just last year. Never cared for soaps.
