I have a problem and need help desperately. About 6 months or so ago, my hubby bought an external hard drive, a Maxtor 3200 to use to store the novel he's writing. He got it just in case if the computer ever crashed, he wouldn't lose his book. Its been working great, no problems, etc. Until tonight. He got home from work, logged on and the I drive (which is the drive for the external hard drive) was gone. He couldn't access his novel. I went to the control panel and checked under device manager and it said it was working properly. I tried unplugging it, rebooting, plugging it back in and everything, but no matter what I do, I can't get it to come back. I've tried different USB ports and everything, with the same results.

Can you please please tell me what I can do to get this back, or else he's screwed. Thats the only place he saved it in.

I appreciate any help you guys can offer. But please, if you aren't sure what to do, don't advise, I can't afford to lose this.

It was originally plugged into one of the front USB ports, I tried both and then unplugged my printer from the back USB port and plugged in back there, nothing happened. Its a plug and play device with no disc if this helps.

Do other USB devices work?

If not, then the desktop may have a problem with the USB controller.

If others DO work, the internal controller in the Maxtor may have died. It might be under warranty, but that won't help recover the novel.
Your last resort may be to send the Maxtor to a data recovery service.

Inside the case is a maxtor hard drive. It is fairly easy to remove the drive if you are careful, and at the worst you will only pop some clamps. You can then install the drive as a slave on your computer and recover your data if you are lucky. There are many causes for this , and a failed hard drive usually is not the problem. I really can't guess, but I will: external hard drive power supply Kaput.
