I am from north east PA and a friend from school who lives in California is coming for a visit. She wants to visit Philly but does not want to see the normal torist spots.I know a few but I wanted to know what are some of the locals favorites. I wanted to know some fun underground stores, resturants and just interesting places to visit . . . . Keep in mind we are poor college kids and are only 19!!!

Just hang on South Street. Fun, local, underground and interesting. I love the Book Trader store where you can hang out for hours.
And although the touristy things might sound un interesting, it's always fun (and free) to go to the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Christ Church. There's also Betsy Ross House, Ben Franklin House and the Edgar Allen Poe house. Some museums have free days and the Free Library is also a cool place. I've taken all my friends who came to visit me in PA to these places and we've always had fun.

South St. is funky but also touristy, but definitely go there. One should always check out the art museum of any town they visit for low cost things to do. Philly's downtown is very walkable, and it is great to tour some of the neighborhoods near downtown like Society Hill (very old, well kept row homes). For something really unique (but a bit bizarre), check out the Mutter Museum of Human Oddities, but make sure you have a strong stomach...some of the things on display are kind of gross.
