I would say the best place to go for authentic mexican is on 26th street. There are several restaurants there, the area is called "Little Village". Another good mexican restaurant is Maria's Mexican Restaurant. One of my favorites. There are a couple locations. Lalo's, and the Hacienda is another good choice.

But it all depends on where in chicago you want to go.

I like Uncle Julio's Hacienda on Clybourn and North Ave. It's more Tex-Mex but I love it. You could also do some research on www.metromix.com just go to the restaurant section and on the left hand side you can search by food type, meals serves, doller amount range and specific neighborhood or suburb. Most places have reviews by either critics or just patron review.
