Like most have said, butter your bread on the outside, put two slices of cheese inside, put the buttered bread in a pan and heat. But here's the important part - you must heat your sandwich very slowly. It will take a good while on low heat for the first side, maybe 5 minutes or so. Just now and then take a peek at the bread. Then, when browned to your satisfaction, flip it over and KEEP AN EYE ON IT. The second side will brown the same amount in about 1 minute. Don't walk away or you'll burn it.
Oh, and why the low heat? Because low heat allows the cheese to melt. Heat it too fast and you have toasted bread and cold cheese. Yuck!
Hope this helps you achieve a new level of deliciousness.

The most important part of any meal is the time and effort you put in to it. To make a great Grilled Cheese Sandwich you need fresh cheese and fresh bread. Ingredients are bread, cheese, and butter.
Take 2 pieces of bread, a slice of cheese and insert the cheese in between the bread, butter the outside of the bread on each side. Place in a pan on low heat and turn when needed, until both sides are golden brown. Serve with pickles and potato chips on the side.

First toast the bread a little lighter than you would normal toast.
Turn on the oven broiler. When the toaster pops, remove the bread, and butter one side. Then put two slices of cheese (the real stuff that you have sliced at a deli counter, not the pre-packaged make believe "cheese food") on each slice of bread. Put the bread in the oven under the broiler, cheese side up, of course.
When the cheese has melted, remove and enjoy, either open faced (possibly with a slice of tomato), or put the slices together and cut the sandwich diagonally...

2 Slices bread, butter one side of each, cheese between bread(butter side out) grill in non-stick pan (medium heat) until golden brown (both sides) Serve with pickle. But don't eat the pickle because pickles are nasty with grilled chees sandwich
