I'm Chinese, and I usually find Zhang Yimou's films (Flying Dagger, Hero, etc) highly exaggerated and out of Chinese character. I saw the trailer for Golden Flower, and I just remember that the queen (Gong Li) plus a lot of the court maids, were wearing very un-Chinese corsets that squeezed their breasts way out of proportion... Not a good impression. Anyone seen it? Would you recommend that I see it?

I'm not, and I live in China.....I'm tired of all this crap that China keeps putting out, big budget kung fu movies, that take place hundreds of years ago, all with the same movie stars....this new one even has Jay Zhou? What the F? Chinese are now putting pop stars in their movies...embarrassing. No, I am boycotting it...
I wish China would put out more relevant movies to what is happening today. There's lots going on...but instead they resort again to Zhang Yi Mo epics...I thinik there are actually only a handful of directors and actors in China, because every movie has the same people in it, and is generally about the same thing/genre. Start making something pertinent to today's China...everyone wants to know!
No more of this fantasy/kung fu/historical/celebrity glitz.

I had the pleasure of seeing this film with special personal appearances by Zhang Yimou and Gong Li... I have to say I was blown away by it! I was not expecting a story with such depth...The cinematography, the art direction, and the sheer enormity of the visuals were staggering. Great sword work... exquisite wire sequences... and HUGE battles - but all done with an intensity that's stunning. And even more, the acting was superb - Chow Yung Fat is a master, and his scenes together with Gong Li are beautifully emotional. Gong Li is more beautiful than ever in a role that demands huge range from the first scene and never lets up... She does her best work ever! I have nothing but praise for this film. I can't wait to see it again.

The movie overall is alot like House of Flying Daggers, great scenes <== wonderful actually, however it lacks a good story plot. So after you watched the movie you wouldn't really feel like it's a great movie but you'll definitely remember the beautiful armors and the palace :)

I haven't seen it yet and may wait til it's on DVD. I agree about the over-the-top grandiose Chinese movies as of late, but Chow Yun-Fat is my all time favorite and it's not often enough we get to see him in anything anymore. The handsome Mr. Chow makes it movie I want to see.
