It depends. If you just buy a phone flat out at full retail price without new service activation you do not get a new #, you just get the phone and its yours to keep. But if you activate new service with a service provider, such as Verizon Wireless, will give you a new number and you get a discount on the phone, unless you want to pay full price for a phone and get new service activation (which really doesnt make any sense to do). I assume that you are talking about a cell phone because you cannot buy a landline. You can buy a landline phone at your local store but you dont get a new number until the phone company gives you a number. They have to set you up with a number!!!!

I believe that it depends on what cellphone comapny you have. Some companies automatically switch your number to your new phone while others may ask if you want a new number. But I'm pretty sure that when you go and switch over to the new phone, whether you're doing that by internet or by telephone, they should ask you if your using the same number.

Depends on what you mean by new phone. You mean new cellphone, same plan? or new phone, new plan? if it is the first one, then if the IC card is the same, then it would have the same number. If you have a new plan, you can choose to keep the old phone number, if you would like.

That depends. If you are upgrading your phone with the same company, then no. If you are switching companies and don't ask to port your number over, then yes. If your buying a cheap prepaid phone from a store, some of them come preactivated with numbers. Maybe a little more info? :)

No, not automatically. About a year ago, they passed a portability law that let's you keep the number you have (if you want it). I just bought a new phone and noted that:
1) I kept my phone number
and
2) I saw a place on their website that they asked me if I wanted to switch to their service (and what my # was)...I didn't because I didn't switch services.
