Gretzky- 0.6 goals per game
1.294 assists per game
1.893 points per game
Lemieux- 0.754 goals per game
1.129 assists per game
1.883 points per game

I didn't realise the stats were that close. They were about even. Can't really come to a conclusion as to who was best.

According to The Hockey News-The Great One magazine the THN best NHL players of all time poll Gretzky is 1, Lemieux is 4. I disagree Gretzky is 1, Orr 2,Lemieux 3. The same issue compares the first 745 games by each player because Lemieux had a shortened career and totals were as follows. Wayne had 616 goals, 1158 assists, 1774 points. Mario 613 goals, 881 assists, 1494 points. Mario was a great player but not The Great One. It seems funny though that the team Wayne coaches sucks

No.

Mario was dominant, however Wayne rewrote the entire way hockey was played. The free wheeling, passing style used by Gretzky and company in Edmonton led to the development and deployment of the left wing lock, which made the game nearly unbearable to watch until the recent rule changes.

Both of them were great players, better people off the ice, and have stories that make them ambassadors for the game. However, I think that Gretzky still comes out on top as the better pf the two.

Its amazing how many of mario's fans forget that Wayne wasn't healthy either. Remember the suter hit??? Look at Waynes stats before and after the almost career ending hit. He also was not healthy the last half of his career.

Plus Mario also had his dynasty years in the 90's. Wayne played in (sic) Ny and LA. Those were not great teams and he still took the kings to the finals and almost the rangers as well.

Man, that's a toughie. Both were such dominant players. Mario is the Bobby Orr of the 90's...both great players that tragically (for the sport) had their careers dramatically cut short by their health.

But since you bring up stats...let's look at them...in Mario's best season he had 199 points. Gretzky had over 200 four times.

Comparing anyone with Gretzky just isn't fair.

From a goal scoring angle, no doubt. He has more ppg then the great one. But Gretsky was a better all around player especially passing. Keep in mind that Gretsky came into several Stanley Cup teams in the 80's with feed men like, Coffey, Messier, Jari Kurri, etc. He then went to other teams with talent such as LA, St. Louis, and NY Rangers. Lemieux was picked by the worst team, and it took years to develop a team around him. They were stuck in a rut for years with only Lemieux putting up any decent numbers. Then injury set in. It wasn't until 1988-89 that the pens were able to start putting team numbers up.
This fact is going to be irrelivant anyway. The way Sidney Crosby is playing, he will hold all of the records. Just ask Lemieux and Gretsky. This is what they said.

Not only was Lemieux limited by injuries and cancer but hockey is definatly a sport where teammates make you better. Gretzky played in the open ice late 70s and early 80s in Edmonton with the likes of Kurri, Coffey and Messier oh and having Grant Fuhr in net lets you play a little less defense. Lemieux spent MUCH of his career with an AHL talent level team and played most of his career in the clutch and grab choke on your whistle 90s. If you switch the teams, switch the eras and switch the games played Lemieux CRUSHES all of Gretzky's numbers in my opinion.

I think Mario was better only because at the begining of his career the Pens were really not that good and he was still producing I don't think Wayne played on any teams that were that bad! So Super Mario if healthy his whole career is better!
