What stops you form making illegal copies and selling it?

Because you are hijacking their product. But if its just for your own personal use, I think it is ethical to make your own copy. The problem is when one person has the only (good)copy of a show that was extraordinary, and that person is not in the band, they may have a temptation to make copies of it and sell them. Depriving the bands of their rightful profit.
Not every show frisks people before entering. New MP3 players smaller than a lighter have DVR digital recording, hmmmm...

I don't think it is legal. Some groups don't mind though. I'm thinking The Grateful Dead encouraged it.

probably coz theyre scared someone might go and sell the video and make money off it and then the musician wouldnt make as much money as they hoped.
