"Algae is not enough, they need algae wafers, zuccini or cucumber. They usually stop eating algae after a little while anyway. Depending on what kind you got, they need driftwood to chew on. Sounds like you got a common pleco, those are the cheap ones. You must have a BIG tank! is it the minimum 175 gallons or is it bigger?

If the person above me really has a common pleco that is that age and size, that is VERY cruel, you have it in too small of a tank and it is stunted. http://bryce.t31g3n.googlepages.com/fish...

People Get your facts before you post. Clearly this guy has no idea what he is talking about. THe pleco can live in smaller than 100 gallons. Depending on the size. A 20 gallon for a baby is pleasure.

It kinda depends on your tank. If it is newly set up, there will not be alot of algea for him to eat yet. Also is you have hungry hungry fish that dont let lots of food goto the bottom to decompose for the algae to grow in, he'll be pretty hungry.

Since you cannt see the algae he needs to eat, you might want to supplement his diet with algae tablets. They sell these at the pet store (they are a "killed" variety of algae that will not cause algae to grow in your tank". I gave mine a tab a couple times a week, so that he was fed, but still hungry enough to do his job.

Ive had it for over 6 years and he has gown to be about 4 inches long. So it's worked for me.

Hey there are plecos that can live in a 20 gallon tank. But Common plecos are not one of those. You can have it in there for a month or maybe 2, if it doesn't stunt that is. But if for some strange reason it does not stunt, it is going to get AT LEAST 2 feet long. If you think that the only person who actually gave you a correct answer is wrong, you clearly need to do some research. You know what? I will do it for you, all you need to to is read and I'll give you the links.

Your tank is WAY TOO SMALL!

Out of the first 10 links on the Yahoo search, 7 support my argument, 2 do not have anything to do with the requirements of common plecos, and 1 of them is an incorrect species profile from a website that I am a member of, and they are in the process of changing those old incorrect species profiles. I did not even look at page 2.

All it takes is a little research! It's not that hard!

Buy him some food. You can buy special food that sinks for him at the pet store. Typically, algae is not enough to keep them alive

we buy algae pellets and give it cooked veges some times - not often tho. Our guy is about 9yo and is about 40cm long. He lives in a large tank with a giant gorami who is also 9yo.

I've got some big plecos, they enjoy Hikari Cichlid Gold that I feed my Oscars, it's great to watch them vertically suspend themselves to eat it.

You need to buy those flat pellets for bottom feeders. They can get quite large and your tank will not sustain him.
