Seriously, Yes!!!!!
I saw a big rat climbing the tree out side of my house 2 weeks ago!!!
I think they are trying to reach the bird nest....

I'm sure they can...they can climb up anything else. A tree would probly be easier for them to climb because the bark would give their claws a better hold...you probably don't see them climbing trees because they tend to hang out in the dark plus being up in a tree would make them a target for hawks etc.

YES!!! I us to live in the city in a rat infested neighborhood....the rats were crazy... we would eat outside in the summer on a patio table with an umbrella under a medium size maple tree...the rats would climb above and climb down the lower branches....totally gross... but they never attacked during a meal......

yes a rat will climb anything if they can smell food especially a tree and they will feed on anything has i have 2 pet rats when i take em in the garden on a harness they climb up my apple tree

Yes, out here in the suburbs there are roof rats. They not only like to sneak into bird-feeders to steal the seeds, but also eat fruit from trees. They are the biggest pain.

Rats are amazing climbers. I have a barn bird feeder hanging over my deck and about once a week I catch one inside eating the seed. They can even climb along clotheslines. You would be surprised.
