There are some drag queens who are transgendered, but not all transgendered are drag queens. Drag queens do it for the "showiness" of it, the glamor of it, for attention.

Transgendered have a disorder known as gender Diaspora. They believe they were actually born into the wrong physical gender.

Not all Drag Queens have this disorder, some are quite happy with all the parts they were born with and have no desire to change genders. Drag is a form of THEATER!

A drag queen is a man who performs the female gender. This is different than crossdressing; crossdressing is the act of wearing the clothing of the opposite sex and sometimes acting it, but it comes from within the person. The feminine or masculine characteristics are theirs, but come out with the right clothing. Drag queens (and kings), on the other hand, are performers first and foremost, and because of that, are often very exaggerated, flashy people. A drag queen may be, and often is a crossdresser as well, but the two may exist separately.

A transgender individual is one who does not fit into traditional definitions of gender (gender being the way one looks and behaves). There are many 'varieities' of transgendered people, so to speak, from those who feel they embody both masculine and feminine characteristics and hence aren't truly one or the other, those who feel they are both, neither, or are a 'third gender', so to speak, some cross-dressers and other folk who don't necessarily think of themselves as men or women in the way that society defines men and women. They do not alter their bodies with surgery or hormones, however.

Not to be confused with:

Transsexuals, those who usually have gender dysphoria, where they feel a mind-body dissonance (that they were born in the wrong body), and they take steps to remedy that with surgery and hormones. Oftentimes transgender individuals will become transsexuals, and some transsexuals, even after their transitions, will realize that they are transgender, and that although they love and prefer their new bodies, they still have traits of each within them (for a wonderful discussion of this, read some of Kate Bornstein's work).

Hope that helps. There's so much overlap within them- drag queens who are transgender, non-op transsexuals who seem pretty much like crossdressers . . . it gets confusing. But these are the basic distinctions: drag queens like to get dressed up and put on a show (not necessarily a real show, just the act of being their fabulous selves is enough of a show!), and transgender people feel themselves to be non-traditionally gendered.

There's LOTS of reasons to be a drag queen. Some are straight men (who probably like the way they look just a little too much), then there's gay men who do it for fun (because it is fun), as a hobby (good income supplement if you can get steady work), or for political reasons (protesting gender, satiring the concept of women's gender, or for the shock value to get attention for something else, and also an interesting study on how differently people treat you). Transfolk do not identify as the gender normally allotted to the sex they were born as. There's crossover (in part because no one's going to get fired from being a drag queen because they're transgender; there are female drag queens too sometimes which I forgot to mention above), but one should never be assumed to be the other.

Drag Queens are usually gay males who get dressed up for an event such as a nightclub show or parade. Obviously they like to wear women's clothes and act feminine. Sometimes they even get paid to do this. Besides the clothes and the behavior during the queens emergence, the similarities end. A transgendered male or female actually wants to be the other sex. This includes wearing women's clothes, getting rid of unwanted hair, wearing make-up, taking hormones and anything else the transgendered person feels they need to do to achieve the opposite sex. This also includes medical procedures such as breast agmuntation, laser hair removal, and eventually an actual sex-change. Transgendered people don't play a role for money or sex, they really and truely want to be the opposite sex and will stop at nothing to achieve this. I know because I'm one myself. I used to think that I just loved women, but in my early teens, I decided that I not only loved women, but wanted to be a woman myself. Everytime I saw a good looking girl, I would have fantasies about being her or wearing her clothes. Soon I started dressing up in my mother's clothes, then my sister's, then my wife's (yes, I was married and my wife knew my secret). Finally I started buying my own clothes and make-up, My wife was alarmed at my large wardrobe of women's clothes and that's when I told her. I;'m sorry about the way I am, I love you always and I wanted to be a woman full time. She was shocked and tried to get me to stop. The problem was that I didn't want to stop. Our sex life had turned into basically in my eyes a lesbian relationship, because the last 3 years of our marriage, I wore women's clothes and acted like a girl! She like it at first, but when I didn't want to take off my panties or remove my fingernail polish or jewelery everyday, she decided she wanted a "normal" relationship. Now I'm beginning my complete transformation into the girl I see myself as. I hope I wasn't too wordy or long but I think you get the gist of the difference

drag queens dress as the other sex and don't care if anyone knows they are male or not. it may or may not be a sex act with them.

transgender is an umbrella term that covers many groups including drag queens

i am taking a guess youy meant transsexuals, who have a deep seeded feeling of being the opposite sex to the point of making changes to their body to look like the opposite sex
