A lot because she represented the "Old Regime" in France; in other words, she was part of the "system."

Marie Antoinette was originally an Austrian princess married off in her teens to the French King Louis XVI (16th). The French were really POed about the First and Second estates (the high clergy and the nobility/royalty respectively) getting all the goodies and leaving the Third estate (everyone else, including rich businessmen and anyone of non-noble birth) high and dry.

The French saw her as a bit of a meanie since she allegedly said for the peasants to "eat cake" (and when she means cake, she doesn't mean an iced bundt cake...she's talking about moldy bread crumbs). She also raped the French treasury by buying craploads of shoes, clothes, jewelry, and even small pieces of estate for herself. The peasants also didn't like foreigners either since Marie was originally Austrian (one of the many kids of Maria Theresa).

However, Marie never really hated the peasants. She was just not allowed to mingle with them or associate with them (that would violate royal protocol). Basically, she resembled a modern-day Hollywood celebrity; living the life of luxury and being alienated from reality.

NOTE: Rach, Louis XVI was not the Sun King; that was Louis XIV, his great-great grandfather.

Marie Antoinette was a child bride of King Louis XVII. He spoiled her badly. It was her extravances that incensed the French people, especially the women. During the French Rebellion, she was beheaded as was the king.
She never uttered the words, "Let them eat cake" when she was supposedly told the people had no bread.

Marie Antoinette was the Austrian wife of Louis XVI (NOT the Sun King!). Her spoiled attitude and contempt with which she viewed the lower classes caused them to hate her. She and Louis were captured by the mob, and then they were eventually beheaded.

Speaking of Movies the new Marie Antoinette was just released two months ago, this was closer to the truth. For all the facts, and beautiful pix and audio/visuals go to www.history.com
Briefly Marie was the daughter of the Queen Maria Therese of Austria, and brother of Peter ruler of Russia, and she was a child married to Louis XVI who was a figure head to take the fall for his grandfather and his brothers. They all picked on him mercilessly, he was a bit of an oaf. Marie was a child who had to finish growing up in a foreign country married to a man who was goofy surrounded by enemies who were powerful and greedy, they set her up to get killed since the enemies were within and they knew with all the starving and the natives were restless she being a foreigner was the target. The angry mob believed all the bad press they sent out to smear her and her husband who in fact were innocent but they chopped off their heads in the guillotine, they tortured her son and daughter. The son confessed after the torture that his mother had taken sexual liberties with him. A very scandalis charge especially in the eyes of the Church. The Church knew better but they walked them both to the gallows anyway , and later they put her son on the throne after the ignorant slobs of France ran things for a while gorging themselves like pigs, and dressing up like baffoons, tripping the lights fantastic. This gave way for Napolean to rule.

There's a story about a necklace that she ordered and refused to pay for, which led to quite a plot with bad press. There's a great movie about it called "The Affair of the Necklace" that tells of the story. This scandal significantly contributed to the mood of the times and series of events that led up to the revolution and eventually Marie's beheading.
