We had the plumber over yesterday to unclog our sink. It cost us $120.00. My husband was asking me if he should tip him $10.00, I said heck no. They are already making enough off of us. So I started wondering. Are you supposed to tip the plumber? I don't think so, what do you think?

I read some great answers here. I have been a plumber for over 15 years. I left my career as a nurse and now I earn 3 x s more.
I own a small plumbing company and I can tell you that after 3 years of 12 to 14 hour days it is refreshing to have a customer offer a tip.
If the plumber has any ethics at all he would thank you and decline the offer. Mostly because he just charged you $120.00 to clear a drain. The job probably took no more than 30 minutes.
If he is self employed he charged to much. If he works for someone than the break down would be in thirds. 1/3 to employee 1/3 to business for advertisements tool maintenance etc. then 1/3 to the owner.
As for the b.c. it is all a matter of self respect.

My father-in-law is a plumber owns his own business. You do not usually tip them. An exception for him would be if they are long time customers (10-20 years) and he has consistently worked for them, they usually give him a small tip at Christmas. They are usually ones who can afford it though, and he feels a bit uncomfortable.
Then you can always slip the tip in his plumbers crack if your single and he is hot. lol
120 to unclog your sink is steep, unless he had to spend a lot of time and take the pipes completely apart. Even then....Maybe it is where you live and calling a big company. Mom and Pop business usually give better rates. Ask first.

Appliance Guy has a logical point there, too. The $120 you paid doesn't go into the repairman's pocket unless he's the business owner himself. If he's an employee, he's paid either by the hour or by the job, and he's really lucky to see half of that. It may seem like a lot, but he's got some expensive tools tied up in his business, and probably a new set of golf clubs, just like the doctor and lawyer do. But tipping is not normally expected with service people and repairmen, any more than you'd tip your doctor or dentist.

If the worker is not the owner of the company and you are well pleased with their work and you feel like you want to show your appreciation a tip is on order but not an obligation. Remember the $120.00 that you were billed does not go directly into the workman's pocket. He only receives a small percentage of that.

Well, maybe you are suppose to; but I am with you, they are making a killing. One of my pipes broke at the fitting last month. Two guys were sent to my home to fix it. They were here less than fifteen minutes and I got the bill for $97.14. All the equipment that was required to fix it was a handsaw and a thirty seven cent fitting, and of course their expertise. It almost made me call up the trade school and start taking the plumbing course. I thought that was pretty good money to be made!

I came across this site because I was also wondering about this tipping thing. My relative has a plumbing business for over 40 years now, and whenever I needed them they would come. But I noticed that my "relative" would always ask me if I gave the guy a tip? I'd say no. After few service calls and "NO" tip from me, they stopped coming, but now they refer another plumbing company that's "NOT" so busy. Yet my relative will ask me if I "TIPPED" the company they sent over. The answer is still "NO"! WTF??? I'm paying for their services, it's not free.

Tipping is restricted to the hospitality industry and the hair salon/manicure/spa. All others are in professions having industry set rates. Tipping just isn't done. Would your husband tip his mechanic?
Great Question!
