Tough problem. Keep his environment warm.Enrich his diet for now (increase his protein) since most respiratory infections are viral in nature. He probably can fight this on his own. Good luck. Have a great year.

Take him to a vet specializing in reptiles, or call your vet if you have a long standing relationship and you're vet knows you well enough. If your turtle is dry docked often make sure you are not using cedar chips for bedding/flooring. Otherwise, make sure water temp is a little warmer then usual for a few days to a week and see if that helps. Of course always keep the tank as clean as possible.

You cure it by dishing out the money to take it to a vet who knows about turtles. Quit being cheap and take some responsibility for the pet you own!

It sounds like yours might have the same thing my Eastern Painted turtle died of a while back. It was sad, as if the lungs were weighting it down and it couldn't float any longer. I took him out of the water but he died anyway; probably of infection.

- Double check basic cares and diet- make sure you are doing it right. Use http://www.redearslider.com or http://www.austinsturtlepage.com for help. Make SURE you have good UV-B lighting- it helps a lot in cases like this.

- Clean everything well- replace what you cannot clean well. Make sure your filter is working well.

- Boost temps about 5F to make things 'snuggly'.

- Minimize stress, noise, vibrations, etc. in the area.
