Can someone refer me to some resources about risks concerning having a child by an older man? I've heard there's a greater chance of the child having Downes Syndrome, is that true? Thanks.

Over 45. :)
I'm younger, so I'm not too worried about my age, but I had a friend come to me and give me this pittying look saying "You're child could have some serious defects..." and even though I've heard that that can be true, I was a little ticked off she'd say something like that... but now I'm just wanting to research. Thanks you guys!

The question is, how old is old? My children's father is 41 and they are 3 years, 18 months and 3 months. All of them are wonderful and without mental or physical problems. The biggest risk I have heard of is Autism. The greater risk is having children with the woman is older. Here are some articles regarding the health risks with older fathers (though I can't say the validity of the articles)http://mentalhealth.about.com/library/sci/0401/bloldsz401.htm

yes it's true that older men pose risks to their unborn children. It is more commonly known/stuidied for there to be more risks witht the woman being over 35 but there is the same risks with dads over 35...down syndrome is one of the risks. YOur dr will probably reccomend some extra testing. BEst of luck!

Downs comes from trisomy 21 from the mother, from the father the embryo is not viable. This is associated with older women.

There is not a lot of risk from the father being older since sperm are hours old, not years like ovum (you have all the eggs you will ever have the day you are born.)

Don't worry to much.

Actually my mother in law saw something on TV about a study that saw an increase in children with Autism born to men over age 40, but most kids that I know that have this have young dads

I've heard the risk is for the mother (when she is older) but never heard about the father. By the way my dad was 40 when I was born and neither me nor my youger brother and sister had a problem.
