I've tried using nice smelling detergents plus liquid fabric softener plus fabric softener sheets. My clothes don't seem to keep the smell for long. What do you suggest?

Try using some Lemon Juice in the wash or some lavender in powder or liquid form.. Dry the clothes on an outside line, clothes dried outside always smell so clean and fresh.
If nothing seems to work, It could also be your water, Have your water checked, you might have a high level of minerals in your water. If this is so, a high level of minerals will make your water hard, which is not good for washing. Water that is too hard for washing, does real well with a Water Softener. A water softener, a machine that filters the water coming into your home and injects softening agent into your water all day long is a little expensive to install but it is worth it especially if you have hard water. Hard water is hard on your clothes, but your clothes will last longer, are more softer and smell nicer with a Water Softener. Taking a bath in soft water is a real treat. Look for a company in your area that does this.. I know that when I lived in the Country our water from a well was very hard, and I was never pleased with the outcome of the wash. When we got a Water Softener, it was great.. the service man would come every month to service it, which is adding the softening agents and such for the water.. It worked great.. I hope this will work for you too .Good Luck.

I agree with Donna Jean, use Downey, there is nothing else like it. So many friends of mine through the years have commented about how great my kids clothes alway smell. You won't smell it after some time, you will just get used to it. But your clothes will be softer, so you will notice when it it missing. Some other great things that I use when a wet pair of jeans sit too long, or something like that are OxyClean, Clorox 2, Bleach, according to common sense. One thing an owner of a laundry matt told me 20 years ago, that I only use occasionally, is ammonia. If you forget a load of laundry and it spoils, use ammonia instead of bleach, along with the detergent and downey. These things have worked wonders for me for many years.

I use gain laundry detergent and then for the rinse cycle put downy april fresh softener in it. I also use gain dryer sheets too. People are always complimenting me on how good my clothes smell. I did some laundry for my cousin and he asked me what I used because it smelled so good. It costs more than the cheap brands but it is worth it to me.

Try to take bath daily. It is not the smell of your clothes. But it is your body smell.
