The items the dollar store gets are all at bottom dollar. I'm sure you've noticed how cheaply made these items are. The items are either crap that don't cost them hardly anything or they mistakes. If you notice, some of the labels will have mis-spellings or the labels will be upside down or something. When this happens, the companies sell these mistakes for extremely cheap. Finally, there is the fact that these products may just be old. They may have been sitting on shelves in warehouses for too long and a company may just be trying to get rid of the useless product for cheap. This is exactly how a Ross or T.J. Maxx work. The products are either defective or are years old fashion lines.

Maybe they have a deal to buy bread for super cheap. perhaps they are really busy at certain times of the day or sell to local restaurants in bulk through their source. Maybe( just kidding) they sell drugs out the back door and selling bread is a cover. ( seems I watch too many movies) The bread which is sold these days in many stores is so full of fillers and air you really can't call it bread. Don't worry, if they weren't making money they would close their doors too. Many businesses now will not stay open if they don't make a killing, a little profit or a just enough to live on is not enough any more. I think at even 68 cents they are doing ok.

Simple economics...

They buy merchandise very, very cheaply (foreign products, overstocks, etc.) and mass market them. I shop at the dollar stores often, but BE CAREFUL of some items and READ THE LABELS!! For example, certain personal hygiene items do have the same production and content requirements as those in the United States (toothpaste, for example - the same "Colgate," "Crest," etc. toothpaste manufactured in the Untied States have a different flouride content than the items the dollar stores get from Taiwan, China, etc.). Also, the boxed food items may be expired, or past their "best use date." Many things though (foil, paper and plastic products, cleaning products, etc.) are top notch!

As prices go up each year with inflation, it would make sense that the dollar stores would have to sell lower quality products or smaller packages to maintain profitability. For example, they might have sold a pound of candy for $1 last year, but this year, the size of the candy for $1 might be only 0.75 lbs.

They charge higher prices. The Dollar Store and the Family Dollar has items which are more expensive than $1.

Well not everything in the dollar store is sold for a dollar and people are bound to buy more then one because of the prices.

They can stay open because of people like me.
I go to the dollar store for one item.
Then I never fail to purchase $20 or $30 worth of merchandise.
It's a curse.
