The soft pop version was James Taylor, song was Handy Man.
Jimmy Jones did the original version when he fronted "the Sparks of Rhythm" in 1959, Del Shannon did it in 1964 (he was most famous for "Runaway") and Taylor recorded it in 1977.
It was my daughter's favourite lullaby:)

I know James Taylor did a version of it, which may be the version you're referring to, but the original version was a bit more upbeat
