I just got a brand new video iPod. It worked great at first, but now after I charge it the charged battery icon always shows up and it won't connect to my pc anymore. Why does it hate me so?

Because its an Apple product. The Microsoft Zune is worse. The not so popular products (ie Creative Zen) are far better.

Perhaps it has different taste in music than you do and does not want you to record that type anymore

press and hold the menu button + the center button for about 6 seconds...that resets it..but does not delete anything
