I agree with you Papillion was awesome. I also think that the shawshank redemption was excellent because it showed the corruption, the brutality among the inmates and the difficulties at adjustments when put back in civilian life. The movie that rounds out my top 3 is Cool Hand Luke which showed how the prison system use to have chain gangs.

excellent question, my favourite prison set movies are brubaker (1980) starring robert redford, Shawshank Redemption (1994) starring morgan freeman and tim robbins. The Last Castle (2001) again with robert redford is another great one.
