The problem with these Gardens is that no one who visited Babylon at the time, eg Herodotus, mentions them, nor have archaeologists found any traces or records of them. This has led some to speculate that they were actually in Nineveh - there is a sculpture of a hanging-gardens-like structure on the walls of the palace of Sennacherib there.

This was in the ancient city of Babylon about 600 BC in the Middle East. Nebuchadnezzar II built this western palace for his wife--one of his wives? Slaves built huge stone terraces and covered them with soil and grass and planted it all over. The "hanging garden" is probably "hanging over" instead of a literal "hanging". He had an very elaborate system of gears and buckets in stages lifting the Tibris waters in order to irrigate the plants/trees! There were never any actual drawings found, just verbal accounts, I guess. Some drawings from the descriptions were done, but mostly pure fantasy. Someone had asked whatever happened to them...they probably had a change of rulers and they dried up and were abandoned thousands of years ago--if they ever existed at all.

Ok. The hanging gardens of Babylon were built by King Nebuchadnezzar for his wife because she liked plants and they reminded her of her home. They were destroyed when Babylon was torched.

From memory I think it was built for the queen of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. She apparently was homesick for her own place where she grew up & he wanted to please her.
