The shower makes a whining noise when turned on. I removed the valve and worked it a bit. The problem is somewhat lessened.

How can I clean this? CLR? Where can I get a replacement?

American Standard is available at most home depot stores. Be sure and take the old cartridge with you when you go to get an exact match
Cleaning it with clr or anything else will erode the rubber that is in side. While you have it out it always best to replace.

yes buy CLR! Any deposits from hard water is either lime or calcium. Put a half of a container in a open bowl and soak the shower head in the bowl attached or not it will work.

If it is making noise from the valve it sounds like your cartridge has gone bad. This happens ad it's no big deal to change. Check out the link i provided below. Cal them and order your part. They helped me!!

Get "the Works" from Wal Mart and soak it in it. It won't take long then rinse it good. Try it to make sure it's O.K.
