A divorce if you change your mind.
What the law creates only the law can disolve.
So, if you are married you can only move on after you get a divorce.
Otherwise you are guilty of bigomy in many countries.
Although, I know of a guy who has three wives, two in his country of origin and one in the country he is living and working in. So at least one country he lives in is okay with the arrangement, though I question his tax filings.
As for me, I think marriage guarantees you a simpathetic ear and a shoulder to cry on when you need them. That is about it.
So who are you proposing to?

It guarantees you are going to pay a fee, and a justice of the peace can perform the service by law. Not much more, morality can improve the validity, but only if it is shared. No expiration date on the license but the marriage may.

NOTHING!! I have been with the father of my two kids for five years and we are not married. Anyone can walk out the door just as easy married or not. The way I see it...we are happy and we might as well leave well enough alone.

It's just a piece of paper, just like a ring is a hunk of metal with a rock in it ... doesn't mean anything except that splitting up is a bit more difficult.

It guarantees that you can change your driver's license, SIN number and bank account info. Those are the only reasons that I had to get one. They wouldn't accept the solemnization.

It guarantees you that you are legally married and have all the rights of married persons. It was never meant to guarantee anything else.

A change in income tax status...except for death and taxes, there are no guarantees. No guarantees....only a few tax refunds.
