tapeworms come from fleas. The dog has to swallow an infected flea to contract the worm. The worm attatches to the intestine and segments of the worm fall off and are seen in the stool (that is not actually the worm itself, just a piece!) Tapeworms usually dont cause much of a problem like round, hook, or whipworms. The dog will need some droncit, but it is not an emergency, just do it when you can! And you may want to treat your dog for fleas now!

Typically dogs get tape worms because they have fleas. If you have your dog on a monthly prevention for fleas/heart worms such as Frontline, Advantage, Advantix, Sentinel, then you shouldn't have a problem with tapeworms. Usually they worms are coming out in the stool because whatever medication your dog is on is working on the dog's system and causing the worms to come out in the stool. You should get a de-wormer from your Veterinarian to help with the process. Once you get the dewormer, the worms come out with a 24 hour period. The best thing for you to do is obviously not handle the dog, but have a family member properly treat your animal with the right medication.

You can buy a tapeworm medicine at almost any pet or feed store. I recommend the liquid form it usually kills them in a 24 hr period. Lots of pooping. I had a lab puppy given to me that ha them so bad he vomited one up. A whole one. Gross. Anyway, the dog will be really hungry all the time and could get dehydrated, their belly will also become swollen. Easy to treat tho, I'd do it asap!

He will continue to be sick and be dehydrated. He needs to get treatment as soon as you can get him to vet. It is a fairly easy diagnosis and is easily treated and should keep you under $100 easily as long as your pup is up to date on vaccines. If he isn't up to date, a veteranarian will want him to be but if you give them a sob story about money problems or whatnot, they may overlook the lack of vaccinations. Good luck.

Malnourishment, illness and possibly death.

Tapeworms are passed in stool, when stepped on etc.
