I could be wrong, but I thought scandium has only three valence electrons, thus its complexes may be among the most electron deficient possible and have the potential to be extremely strong Lewis acids.

I double checked and it is three.

The electronic configuration of Sc is

1s2 2s2 2p4 3s2 3p4 4s2 3d5

because there are two electrons in the last energy level (4s2)
there are 2 valence electron.

Nilson was trying to extract beta proteins from old isotopes of cadium. The process he was using resulted in extracting a new substance, Scandium, instead. (21 just happened to be the isotope he found). It is used in semiconductor devices as a catalyst in the P-N/N-P junctions. It allows maximum heat dissapation along with a low valence electron count. It is found in Scandanavia (hence the name).

2 electrons in the valence shell...b/c it only fills 4s2, none in the
4 p's
