I have two or three (depending on perpective) male Australian housemates. As Aussies, they spend their life smoking, drinking and barbecuing in the back garden.

They have now developed a habit of going out for the day and leaving the back door open. Not even unlocked, but actually open. We are all professionals (as professional as it's possible for an Australian to be, anyway) so on any given weekday the house is open for ten hours or more.

We live in a mid-terrace house so their argument is that no-one can get into the backyard anyway. But I reckon that's rubbish; someone can get into an end-terrace house and therefore can make their way along the row from there.

The reason why I am awake posting questions at 3:00am is because I am too scared to go to sleep; the door was left open all day today.

We have nothing worth taking, but I worry about personal safety.

So my question is, what do you all think? Am I stupid to worry? Or should I go kick some Australian a55???

You need to have a serious word with them - tell them they are NOT in Australia now and things are different here. I also live in a mid-terrace house and that didnt stop the idiots I caught getting in through my bathroom window one evening !!! We have had several instances of people jumping across the back fences to access the houses or gardens - they even stole a bike from my neighbours garden. Obviously our doors are kept locked and I now have 2 dogs in the house - but if they see the door open they are gonna get in, rob you blind and just leave via the front door !!!!!

You're not stupid for worrying! If I was you I would move out, failing that I would get cameras set up(as i have now)and get a panic alarm installed.I live in a mid-terrace in the UK and nowhere is safe these days.Security is a No1 priority regardless if you've got anything worth taking or not.

It is what the majority of people live in. Terrace houses are quieter than flats but noisier than detached ;) The noise level does depend on the quality of the building - and we have no way of checking that. It would be checked on a full structural survey.

If it's an irreconcilable matter - and it sounds like it is - I suggest making your backyard as unattractive as possible. Litter your yard with as many beer cans, cigarette butts and chewed-up t-bones as you can stand. Sure, you may draw some vermin and possibly the local health department, but it will make your home so unattractive to potential (human) interlopers that you will again be able to sleep at night. Assuming you can deal with the flies.

Best of luck!

I wouldn't worry about someone lying in wait for you to go to sleep, but I'd have a big problem with the roommates.

Kick their butts! Oy! Oy! Oy!

we all worry far to much about this sort of thing...mostly due to media giving us big helpings of bad news every day...also the security industry who want to sell us things to keep us safe...(you ever heard house/car alarms going off..?).I agree with your Aussies...however I think the door should at least be closed to keep out wandering animals..rats,mice,cats etc
