we have just carried out a hydrogenation in a 3000 L stainless steel vessel but can not get it clean anymore coz its coated with carbon particles. Tried water, differnt organic solvents, dilute acids, sand, detergent etc. Anymore ideas?

Two ideas that work. DMSO as a solvent and combustion to carbon dioxide.

If you don't care about the temper and it is only carbon, then heat it up to a nice low glow with a good flow of air going by it. This will burn out the carbon to CO and CO2.
