The main causes of constipation include:

Hardening of the feces
Insufficient intake of dietary fiber
Dehydration
Medication, e.g. diuretics and those containing iron, calcium, aluminium
Paralysis or slowed transit, where peristaltic action is diminished or absent, so that feces are not moved along
Hypothyroidism (slow-acting thyroid gland)
Hypokalemia
Injured anal sphincter (patulous anus)
Medications, such as loperamide, opioids (e.g. codeine & morphine) and certain antidepressants
Severe illness due to other causes; occasionally colds or flu
Acute porphyria (a very rare inherited condition)
Lead poisoning
Dyschezia syn(usually the result of suppressing defecation)
Constriction, where part of the intestine or rectum is narrowed or blocked, not allowing feces to pass
Strictures
Diverticula
Tumors, either of the bowel or surrounding tissues
Psychosomatic constipation, based on anxiety or unfamiliarity with surroundings.

Yes, "SH" is right. But, . . that's not the whole story. From personal experience, and observation of others, I can tell you this: keep away from--or drastically cut down on--fast food and highly processed food (tv dinners for example); the same applies to coffee and alcoholic drinks. (Alcohol destroys some or all of the B vitamins, which keep the blood vessels in the anus in good shape. Hemorrhoids, swollen blood vessels, are usually associated with constipation. They have a distinctive odor: either fecal, musty, or sour. Long-term winos--alcoholics--are usually recognizable by such a smell.). A sedentary lifestyle also contributes to constipation; which means get more--and regular--exercise. The best sources of fiber come from natural foods: fruits and vegetables. Take vitamin suplements to augment--or increase--the body's supply. (Everyone has different needs in that area. You'll have to experiment to find the level of your body's needs.)

Foods don't cause constipation. Its the amount and selection of the food that causes constipation. If you eat too much of one kind of food, you will get constipated. Your body needs a variety of foods in small amounts. Eating at McD's every day will definately give you constipation. Another cause of constipation is mental stress. When your brain is in chaos, so is your body. Learn to relax and enjoy your meals.

The most basic explination is that the intestine absorb too much water from the fecal matter, allowing it to become hardened and difficult to pass. Things that can cause the intestine to do this vary widely. A few examples would be, waiting too long between bowl movements, taking certain medications (particullarly percription pain meds) or even just stress.

Diet and stress.

Exercise, and ensure you have sufficient fibre in your diet - think of it as a natural scrubbing brush you're sending through.

Watch a movie or do what you enjoy to reduce some stress. Oh yea, and don't conspirate anyone ;-)

You know what goes in, comes out. or was that what goes around....

BTW, if you are really stuck (!) you could try some milk of magnesia or mineral oil.

I'm a nurse. It is from a lack of fiber and/or fluid intake. I would eat more veggies, and drink more water. This will help you. There are also OTC fiber drinks you can use. I hope this helps you.
