Psychologists can't dispense medicine. Psychiastrists take an additional step and go to medical school in order to dispense medicine. Psychaitrist focus more on the medical aspect (brain disorders) which can be treated with drugs. Psychologists deal more with emotional disorders.

Both are Greek words and that helps me explain exactly Psychology comes from the words Psychi(ψυχη) which means SOUL and Logos which in this case means STUDY So psychology is the study of soul
Psychiatry comes also from the word Psychi meaning soul and the word IATROS(ιατρος) meaning Doctor,healer That means Psychiatry is the science of not only studying but also healing the soul

Psychiatrists are medical doctors (with an MD). Psychologists have a Ph.D. Psychiatrists can prescribe meds, psychologists cannot. People with a mental illness often see both: a psychiatrist (or pdoc) for medication management and a psychologist (or tdoc) for therapy and counseling.
