You need to ask this separately in the cat section for advice on cats. For dogs, as long as it hasn't been going on for more than a day, or as long as it isn't chronic in nature (reappearing weekly or so) -- try feeding bulky foods like rice in a 3:1 ratio to boiled ground beef or chicken. You need to avoid fats. Then add to this a bit of canned pumkin - not the pumpkin pie filling, just plain pumpkin. Every dog and cat I've had loves this stuff, and it's a miracle substance because it can be used for both diarrhea and constipation. Finally, depending on size of dog ,put in a teaspoon of plain yogurt every other day. This serves as a probiotic and can be done even when they don't have diarrhea. But as I said, this is for sporadic treatment. It doesn't replace a vet visit if the diarrhea is frequent, or other symptoms are present. The fact that you don't want to take them to a vet is understandable if they're not sick. If they're sick, it sounds a bit silly.

I agree with the BRAT diet. You should also take some acidophilus to replenish your friendly bacteria in your intestinal tract that is depleted when you get diarrhea. I wouldn't take over-the-counter anti-diarrhea medications because this can have a rebound effect and make you constipated. You get the diarrhea from gastrointestinal distress.

eat fiber. Believe it or not, Daria means your are backed up. The fluids are going around a big turd in your colon and that's why you only lose liquid. Drink lots of water also. Stay away from the caffeine.

I would suggest a Peptobismol. Best stuff.
If that doesn't work, ask your doctor.
You'll end up getting small pills that help prevent it.

Don't do anything. Diarrhea is your body's way of getting rid of whatever toxin is bothering it. If you try to "plug yourself up" with crap, it will just make you sick. Trust me!
