I got a ticket for making a right turn at a red light without completely stopping. I am a minor so I got a letter in the mail saying I have to show up and pay $379. But I take a closer look and I see that they have charged me with something else. I believe the charge against me is running a red light, when I did not. Is there anything I can do?

Find out what the Ordinance # is on the citation. An Ordinance # will correspond with a specific law - example 22-261 - a driver must come to a complete stop at a red light or stop sign.

Look up the Ordinance # and see if that is what you are charged with. If that # does not correspond with what you were cited for... I would fight the ticket.

Depends on the laws of your state. If there is a spot on your ticket stating you can go to court and dispute the charges you may want to do that instead of paying the money now. I would think that a "California stop" and actually running a red light are 2 different charges. Same as running a stop sign is just that but a california stop is a different charge not actually running the stop sign. I'd look into it more before paying the money because once you do you agree to all charges on the ticket. If you can go to court maybe the judge would differentiate between the charges. Maybe you'll have to own up to both but maybe not.

Dude, not stopping completely at a red light, no matter which direction you're going through it in, is running a red light. Lights are put at intersections that are deemed busier than where a stop sign is needed and are much more dangerous to run than a stop sign, thus, the high fine. If you did the same slow-down, right turn at a stop sign it would be blowing a stop sign but probably wouldn't be as high a fine.

There is nothing you can do except for pay for the fine because you are guilty. Also, you need to reread your driver's handbook man because this is basic traffic law.

Technically you did not stop for a red light, regardless if you were turning or not! The law states you can make a turn on a red light, but only after a complete stop!

That is a hefty fine, but imagine if you had to pay twice that amount every month for child support?

Try showing up for the court date and disputing the charge. Sometimes the issuing officer doesn't show up. In which case you'll have a better chance of getting the ticket dismissed, or arguing the penalty down. It worked for a friend of mine.

You did say you went through a red light, It matters little whether you coasted or ran through a red light. You did not make a complete stop then execute your turn.
