If Barbie would be a real person, she would be taller, and way, WAY skinnier than any other person on the face of the earth. And, by acting as a role model to kids, it's like teaching them that skinny is beautiful, and that's what's important. But that's wrong. People come in all shapes and sizes, and it's the inside that counts. It doesn't matter how you look, it's who you are on the inside.

Because so many girls idolize Barbie they are distracted from the real morals that they should be learning. The people who work in Barbie should know that kids imitate who they idolize. So, as of today, Barbie is definetely not a good role model.

Barbie is an inanimate object. She is not a role model. She may make explaining to little girls that women should just be who they are a bit more difficult, but the TRUE role models are the parents, the friends, and in some ways -since this is a pop-culture society - celebrities. Look at guys, why are their toys what they are? G.I Joe, dumptrucks, all toys are based on stereotypes that are mostly true. Men ARE usually more strong and women are naturally more nurturing. Barbie is just a product of the 50's, and has lasted so long because she's been made to change with our culture. Now, she has a car, a lawyer suit, and a boyfriend, who by the way, could be argued as a "bad role model" for guys to model themselves after, and girls for what to look for in a guy, but that's the only if children aren't talked to by their parents about gender-roles. This is a topic that could invariably be argued infinitely. If you'd like one author's opinions on JUST this subject, read the barbie article in "Signs of Life in the USA". Personally, I feel it's less of an English Textbook and more of a social & Cultural Theories textbook, but it's still used and still argues that point.

First, Barbie is a toy of fantasy and not reality. Therefore, a role model she cannot be. Only living examples such as parents can be role models. However, Barbie can be used as a tool to express thoughts and ideas through play. Without proper guidance or participation by the adult parent or guardian the child may confuse the fantasy of the doll play with the reality of life. There can be the enjoyment with the toy without the demand of unreasonable expectations.

barbie is way to skinny and disproportional that it is ridiculous. I am unsure of what the figures are, I suppose it is online somewhere, but, if barbie were human she would have a bust that is huge, a waist that is I think 18 inches, hips that are 36 inches, it was all out of whack.
Young girls are viewing barbie as a role model, although much less so than their parents did, this is because only really little kids tend to play with barbie, under 6. BUT, we are all exposed to the advertisements so males as well as females are seeing this toy as a figure of a woman.

I understand where you're coming from, but, why Barbie? Very few children want Barbie dolls anymore. Consider aiming your essay towards something that's popular, like Bratz dolls. I can't tell the difference between a Bratz doll and the 5-dollar hooker that stands on the street corner.

Actually scientists determined that if the typical barbie doll were actually a human being she would be unable to walk or move very well at all. Her muskoskeletal system cannot function with her designed "attributes".

i think its perfect when being a role model on weight
today's generation has a massive number of child obesity.
its pressuring women and men to be skinny too, but that could lower the obesity rate.
