Top Speed wise...
Currently the fastest production car on sale is the Bugatti Veyron, It clocked 253mph at Volkswagens test track.
There are other cars that the press claim could beat it, but none has done it yet.
Acceleration wise...
The Ultima GTR, built buy a small firm in England, currently holds the quickest 0-100-0 time at 9.4 secs
It does 0-60mph in 2.6 secs and 0-100mph in 5.3 secs
Not sure if this is the record for 0-60 but must be close the veyron does it in around 2.9
As for non road legal cars, top fuel dragsters running about 8000hp do a 1/4 mile in about 4 secs at about 350 mph. 0-60 isnt even worth measuring!

The car you may be thinking of is the Mirabeau by Wiess sportscars, I met Mr Wiess in France this summer, the Mirabeau maybe has the potential to go that fast, but it still hasnt set an official record, the McLaren F1 only did 240mph, there are a few more manufacturers who claim their cars are the fastest, but talking is one thing, actually managing to drive a car that fast is another. The Bugatti Veyron is still the fastest car at 253 . I will happily be proved wrong with reliable sources though.
And of course I forgot the Thrust SSC! My apologies!

ALL THE OTHER ANSWERS ARE WRONG, this summer in switzerland 27 cars were made from carbon fiber, i cant spell or say the names but they beat the mclarens speed of 251mph by 3 mph and the bugatti veyron can barely touch 230 that person has no idea what they talkin about, bugattis are most expensive not fastest.
